They also block access to these sites, automatically, by filtering the IP addresses of these social media sites on their networks. “What are their reasons? Many employers site the introduction of malicious software into their company networks, potential unauthorized access by hackers and loss of production hours as some of the main reasons. “However, although they succeed in preventing employees using company devices like desktops and laptops to access social media sites, employees can still access these sites, during working hours, by using company OR their own mobile devices like smart phones, PDAs, tablets etc. “As a result, the loss of production hours is not really addressed. “Furthermore, by using either company or their own mobile devices to access social media sites, with which employees also connect to their company networks, security concerns of employers are NOT addressed at all. If these devices should get compromised, the relevant company networks would also experience security breaches. “To address the issue of low productivity, employers need to deal with employees’ use of social sites on mobile devices (regardless whether these devices are personal or company assets), during working hours, in their policies. “To address the security issues, access to SOCIAL MEDIA SITES, by means of personal (if at all) and/or by company mobile devices, and to COMPANY NETWORKS should be tackled as well. “However, companies need to keep in mind that social media is today an integral part of company marketing and it is therefore absolutely important to allocate the responsibility for social media advertising to specific employees and all together address connectivity to social sites like Google+, Facebook and Twitter for these employees and their computer and mobile devices.” - Michiel Jonker Message: This cartoon illustrates an employer blocking employees to use social media on company desktops/laptops; however, at the same time, being totally ignorant of the use of mobile devices by employees to access sites like Google+, Facebook and Twitter.
